Sanding marble by hand. After going over the entire surface with 120 grit sandpaper. Work the sander over the granite countertop until the entire surface area is lightly sanded intermittently stopping and misting the work area with water. Use special silicone carbide sandpaper in range of grits to slowly work out those imperfections. Dirt and dust will compress into the marble further scarring or discoloring the surface.
As an alternative use sheets of sandpaper or a sanding block and sand the marble top by hand. While this method will work fine for statues tile and marble countertops sanding large areas of marble like marble floors requires a completely different process and technique. This will require using a wet sanding process to achieve the desired results. Before sanding or grinding any marble surface it is important to clean the area thoroughly.
